The head of state, president Yoweri Museveni has urged leaders of the National Organization of Trade Unions in the country to strive for the transformation of the Ugandan economy from a state of backwardness to a modern one.
The President was speaking in a meeting with NOTU leaders and representatives yesterday at State House, Entebbe. He expressed happiness that the labour movement in the country is united.
I am glad to see that the labour movement is now united from 20 to 33 unions with a population of 1.5 million. However, you need to agree on the strategy of transforming the society, he said.
The President stressed to the meeting that for the labour movement to positively expand and change society, there is need for effective use the factors of production, namely land, skilled labour, capital, entrepreneurship and knowledge.
He assured the meeting that his pledge of Shs.850 million towards the construction of the NOTU will be fulfilled.
During the meeting, a number of pertinent issues affecting trade union workers were raised by Secretary General of NOTU, Mr Christopher Werikhe and discussed. They included outsourcing of workers by industries, regulation of telecommunications companies and the National Health Insurance Scheme, among others.
