Security agencies are yet to release a statement on the sudden disappearance of Sheikh Yahaya Mwanje, who was picked up by unknown gunmen in a silver-grey drone car on Monday.

Sheikh Mwanje, also Deputy head of the Jamatil Salafiya Tablique Muslim community was arrested moments after holding a press briefing at Nakasero Mosque in Kampala.               

Armed men dressed in civilian attire dragged him into a Toyota Hiace Reg number UPM 187E at 9am.

Following his arrest, there has been growing concern from his community over the circumstances of his arrest, whereabouts and charges meted on him.

Last week Abdul Wahab Buyondo was taken mid-last week under unclear circumstances.
Shk. Yunus Kamoga the head of the Tabligue Muslim sect says this is the second kidnap on one of them in a space of just one week.

“Another brother of ours Abdul Wahab Buyondo was also arrested. We ask Allah to protect those brothers of ours, especially during this tough time. We shall keep you up to date but at the moment we don’t know anything,” said Kamoga.

Kamoga says efforts are still underway to establish the whereabouts of Mwanje. He has called on fellow Muslims to calm down as they await any official communication.

Sheikh Mwanje, was in 2019 granted a non-cash bail of 20 million shillings at the International Crimes Division Court for alleged connection to the murder of UPDF Officer Major Muhammad Kiggundu and his bodyguard.

Late Kiggundu, a sheikh, together with his bodyguard Stephen Mukasa, was shot dead on November 26 2016 at Masanafu Trading Centre in Lubaga Division.

Mwanje had been in custody between 2016 and 2019 alongside others like Sheikh Muhammad Buyondo alias, Matiya and Abdul Wahab Sendegeya both Boda Boda riders in Kyengera and Musa Sekandi, alias Masanafu.

The same group also faces charges of aiding and abetting terrorism and belonging to a terrorist group (ADF) between 2010 and 2017.
