The incident that happened at 9:30 am on Tuesday morning involved a Premio Registration number  UBE 862V and a Canter Registration number UAM 911Y Canter.

According to Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic and road safety spokesperson, the premio was being driven by Rwothomio Douglas a resident of Namirembe, Kampala who survived with minor injuries.

She explains that preliminary investigations suggest that Rwothomio was driving recklessly when he bumped into the Canter that was fully loaded with electric poles. She states that after the accident, the unidentified driver of the Canter fled the scene.

Nampiima has also faulted the Canter driver for dangerous loading, causing the accident. She adds that investigations are still ongoing into the matter.

This incident comes as traffic police have registered a rise in road crashes resulting from reckless driving, overspeeding, drunken driving, use of vehicles in dangerous mechanic conditions on the road among others.

On Monday, traffic police revealed that 152 people had perished in road accidents in a period of two weeks between January 30th to February 12.

Nampiima indicated that between February 5 to 12, 2023,  92 people died while 300 others sustained serious injuries. Also 408 road crashes were registered, of these 87 were fatal, 201 were serious, and 114 minor.

Between January 29 to February 04, 60 people died and 271 were injured in road accidents.
