The suspect in the brutal killing of four children at a daycare center in Ggaba, Kampala, will be tried using Uganda’s newly introduced mobile court system.
Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo confirmed the development while speaking at a funeral service for retired Supreme Court judge Augustine Sebuturo Nshimye at All Saints Church.
“We are going to handle this case within this week… through the mobile court system,” Abodo stated.
The suspect, Christopher Okello Onyumu, allegedly carried out the attack on April 2, 2026, after posing as a parent to gain access to the daycare.
Trial at the Scene
Under the mobile court system—formalized through the Constitution (Operation of Mobile Courts) (Practice) Directions, 2026—the trial will take place at the actual crime scene, allowing proceedings to happen outside traditional courtrooms.
This means the case will be heard directly at the daycare, in a setup similar to a public tribunal.
Victims Identified
The victims, all aged between two and three years, have been identified as:
- Gideon Eteku
- Kaise Alungat
- Ignatius Sseruyange
- Ryan Odeke
The tragic incident has shocked the nation, raising serious concerns about security in learning institutions.
Government Action
Following the attack, State Minister for Higher Education John Chrysestom Muyingo ordered the closure of the daycare center pending investigations.
The decision to use a mobile court signals urgency in handling the case, as authorities aim to deliver swift justice in one of the most disturbing crimes in recent memory.
