Kampala Woman lawmaker Shamim Malende announced on her Facebook page that she and her husband, Shamil Ssebunya, had parted ways. The news was initially met with disbelief by many, who dismissed it as a political stunt in the midst of a heated battle for the National Unity Platform (NUP) party ticket.
Unlike previous elections, Malende is now in a tough race against Zahara Luyirika, the current speaker at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), and Winfred Nakanini, another competent party member.
However, the drama has proven to be all too real. Both Malende and Ssebunya have separately confirmed that their five-year marriage has irretrievably broken down, and they're not holding back on the explosive accusations.
The Husband's Side: "She Thought She Was Everything"
Ssebunya claims the marriage hit the rocks after he found suspicious messages on Malende’s phone. He says he tried to be patient, hoping their issues would "come to pass," but was shocked when she sent people to collect her belongings.
“I found her with nothing apart from her law degree, and we started from zero,” he said, adding that he worked with her and helped her build her wealth. He accused Malende of trying to steal his vehicles by registering them in her name.
Addressing critics who say he married her for money, Ssebunya was defiant. “She honestly had nothing, and we used to stay in a rented premise in Nansana. I prayed for her to win the elections, and God answered.”
According to Ssebunya, everything changed once Malende became an MP. “When she was not in Parliament, she used to respect me. But after winning the elections, she undermined me because she thought she was everything. She refused to cook. She told me point blank that she was not my housegirl.”
He also dismissed claims that he was trying to sabotage her political career, saying, “If I wanted to sabotage her, I would not have supported her political career. I even escorted her for medical details.”
The MP Fires Back: "He is No Longer My Representative"
Confirming the split, a defiant Malende issued a public warning about her estranged husband: “Whoever deals with Ssebunya, who has been my friend and husband, does so at their own risk. He is no longer my representative.”
Choosing to be more discreet, she said that while there were “many issues,” as a “well-brought-up Muganda woman,” she would not air their dirty laundry in public to "preserve our dignity." She instead asked her supporters to pray for her, as she is “going through a lot.”
Malende also accused Ssebunya of his own thievery, alleging he stole two of her vehicles and confiscated her crucial Facebook and TikTok accounts. She explained that he took them for political mobilization and that she has had to open new accounts to continue her work. Malende has called on her supporters to help her regain access to the social media pages.
The lawmaker also said she is living in fear, though Ssebunya denies making any threats towards her.
In a final twist, Malende also claims Ssebunya stole a Shs150m vehicle from her before their marriage soured.
