The Government is cooking up a special fund for Born-Again pastors, NRM national treasurer Barbara Nekesa has revealed.
Speaking to thousands of pastors in Busia, Nekesa said Born-Again churches have been operating without any direct government support, yet they depend entirely on their struggling congregations.
She confirmed that after engagements with Speaker Anita Among, government is ready to roll out a modest Pastors’ Fund to boost church development programmes.
Surprisingly, when Nekesa asked how many pastors benefit from government initiatives like PDM and Emyooga, only a few hands went up.
She urged pastors to support President Yoweri Museveni in the January 15 elections, praising NRM for giving them freedom to operate—even when some churches aren’t registered.
Meanwhile,
Bishop Georg Washakina accused local officials of sidelining Born-Again churches when distributing poverty-fighting programmes.
“People expect us to support them, yet pastors are broke too,” he lamented.
Pastor John Vincent Bwire said their SACCO needs government cash injection to survive.
For five hours, pastors chanted NRM slogans and hailed Museveni for enabling them to preach freely.
