Democratic Front (DF) member Abed Bwanika has taken a swipe at musician-turned-politician Mathias Walukaga following a High Court ruling that upheld the Electoral Commission’s decision to cancel Walukaga’s nomination for the Busiro East parliamentary race.

Reacting to the judgment on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Bwanika said the court could not “manufacture or award academic qualifications,” advising Walukaga to return to school and properly prepare for future elections.

“The court cannot give you academic qualifications. If you lack them, go back to school. 2031 is not far,” Bwanika remarked.

On 21st December 2025, the High Court dismissed Walukaga’s election petition after finding that he did not possess valid academic qualifications at the time of nomination.

In a detailed judgment, Justice Simon Peter M. Kinobe ruled that Walukaga relied on an expired academic certificate, rendering his candidature invalid.

The judge held that:

  • An expired certificate cannot support a legitimate nomination

  • The petitioner lacked valid academic qualifications at nomination

  • The Electoral Commission was right to cancel the nomination

  • The Electoral Commission acted lawfully throughout the process

While dismissing the petition, Justice Kinobe declined to award costs to the respondents, noting that the case raised an important public legal issue that had not previously been tested in Uganda’s courts. Each party was therefore directed to bear its own costs.

The ruling effectively closes Walukaga’s legal challenge, as the High Court was both the first and final appellate court in the matter.
