Musician Karole Kasita has opened up on her growing frustration over the long-delayed copyright law amendment, saying she has almost completely lost hope in the government’s commitment to protect creatives.

Speaking during an interview with a local YouTuber, Kasita accused the government of abandoning musicians after initially engaging them through the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF).

“There was a time when the government listened to us and took us seriously, but that time passed. Now they just use us, and when it comes to what really matters to us, nothing moves,” Kasita said.

The singer believes artists were “used and dumped”, claiming the government only engaged them for public image and political convenience, then went silent on the real issues — especially the copyright amendment that would secure their earnings.

In 2023, musicians and other creatives formed the UNMF, under the leadership of Eddy Kenzo, with the main goal of pushing for reforms in the copyright law to protect intellectual property and royalties.

Nearly three years later, the amendment remains untouched, leaving artists stuck in uncertainty and frustration as their work continues to generate profits without adequate legal protection.
