The former Executive Director Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA Moses Mapesa, has this afternoon succumbed to acute Leukemia at his privately owned Nabulola Health Community Initiative in Busia district.

Reports from a family member, who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity, indicate that Mapesa had just returned from US for a bone marrow transplant, where he was diagnosed with myeloid leukemia.

The abnormal production of cells can also progress to production of cancer like cells causing acute myeloid leukemia. By press time, Mapesa's body had been transferred to Rubongi Military hospital. He is survived by seven children and a widow. Mapesa joined UWA in 1988 as a researcher.

He would later be deployed as a warden for Queen Elizabeth National Game Park 1996 before he was promoted as coordinator for planning, monitoring and research in 2001.

In 2002 the late Mapesa was made deputy director field operations from where he was appointed executive in 2005. He served up to 2010 when he left the organisation under acrimonious circumstances.
