On Thursday morning, Winfred Nakandi confirmed her withdrawal from the NUP flag-bearer race for Kampala Woman MP.
Nakandi made the announcement during a press conference where she addressed journalists about irregularities in the process.
Nakandi, who had been vying for the party ticket against incumbent Shamim Malende, Kampala City Council Authority Speaker Zahara Luyirika, and Agnes Namagembe, accused the elections management committee of favoring certain contenders.
She cited irregularities in the party's recent vetting process for local government candidates, explaining that it was unfair and a mockery to the members of the National Unity Platform.
The latest information we have gathered is that Nakandi will be running for the position as an independent and will be making an official announcement in the coming days.
"She is considering running independently because she has the resources. She believes the people in Kampala will vote for her. She is still supporting Bobi Wine for the top leadership of the country," a source revealed.
Her exit from the contest for the NUP flag for Kampala Woman MP leaves space for the two main contenders, Shamim Malende and Zahara Luyirika, to go into a battle of titans.
However, it also deepens tensions in Uganda’s leading opposition party, where rival camps accuse each other of blackmail.
The National Unity Platform will kick off its nominations for parliamentary candidates on the 15th of this month.
