What began with hope, hype and bold promises has ended in total disappointment for Mathias Mpunga and his political outfit, Democratic Front (DF).

Back in May 2025, Mpunga confidently unveiled DF, surrounded by seasoned political figures including Abed Bwanika, Samuel Lubega Mukaku, Michael Mabikke, among others. The party positioned itself as a fresh force aimed at reshaping opposition politics in Buganda.

As the 2026 elections approached, DF leaders made the strategic decision not to front a presidential candidate, insisting their focus was squarely on parliamentary seats. The party went ahead to absorb several aspirants who had been denied tickets by the National Unity Platform (NUP) and even paid their nomination fees, hoping to score big at the polls.

Fast forward to election results — and the gamble completely backfired.

Democratic Front failed to secure a single MP seat nationwide. Every DF flag bearer lost, including the party president himself.

Mpunga suffered defeat in Nyendo–Mukungwe Constituency, Masaka City, where he was beaten by NUP’s Sebina Gyavira.

The disastrous performance places DF among several minor parties that were wiped out in the parliamentary races, including JEEMA, Common Man’s Party, National Peasants Party, and the Ecological Party, all of which failed to register even one MP.
