The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has expressed concern that politics is negatively affecting Uganda’s music industry, saying many artistes have lost focus.
Speaking to Buganda leaders in Mengo on Monday, Mayiga cautioned musicians against excessive involvement in political activities that do not translate into leadership roles.
He noted that while it is acceptable for artistes to join politics, it should be with the intention of taking up leadership positions rather than merely mobilizing support for others.
“Musicians have lost concentration because many of them are involved in politics. Some are not seeking leadership roles but are instead moving around mobilizing support. If you join politics, do so to lead, not to remain idle,” Mayiga said.
He encouraged artistes to draw inspiration from figures like Bobi Wine and Geoffrey Lutaaya, who transitioned into active political leadership.
Mayiga’s remarks come at a time when several Ugandan musicians are increasingly engaging in political activities, sparking debate about the balance between entertainment and governance.
