Hoax!

The frenzy was triggered by MediaFetcher.com. The site has been spinning bogus stories about other celebs they claim are dead but are not -- including Jon Bon JoviCharlie SheenAdam SandlerTooShortDwayne JohnsonKevin BaconLuke PerryJack BlackWill SmithJaden SmithTom GreenMac MillerTiger Woods, George Clooney, and others.

Poor Eddie Murphy.

Every few months or so he turns up dead – in an Internet hoax. That rumor is making the rounds again this week. Here’s how he allegedly met his maker.
According to an outfit called Global Associated News – remember that name – Murphy died in a snowboarding accident in Switzerland.
"Witnesses indicate that Eddie Murphy lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree at a high rate of speed,” the “news” agency reports.

“Eddie Murphy was air lifted by ski patrol teams to a local hospital, however, it is believed that the actor died instantly from the impact of the crash. The actor was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played any part in his death."

Yeah, well, the reason drugs and alcohol don’t appear to have played any part in his death is because EDDIE MURPHY IS ALIVE AND WELL!

The lesson for the day, people, is this: Read the fine print.
At the bottom of the Global Associated News website, you will find this disclaimer: "THIS STORY IS 100% FAKE! this is an entertainment website, and this is a totally fake article based on zero truth and is a complete work of fiction for entertainment purposes!"

Tell that to the poor souls who believed that their beloved Eddie had passed on to the great comedy stage in the sky and took their grief straight to Twitter.

"Yo, Eddie Murphy died. I'm about to cry...."

"Eddie Murphy died ?! That is so sad to hear... #RIP"

This same snowboarding hoax story has popped up several times over the last year or so. Since 2009, other celebrities have allegedly died in the same accident – the story is a template with an insert-name-here theme – including Denzel Washington and Adam Sandler.

So if Eddie isn’t snowboarding, what is he up to these days?

Last week he dropped a new song called “Red Light,” his first single in two decades. The hip-hop-tinged reggae song features Snoop Lion, that guy formerly known as Snoop Dogg.

“I had so much stuff recorded," Eddie told Rolling Stone. “Everything that’s on the shelf, it’s not a masterpiece but I got a lot of s— that’s really strong stuff. I was like, ‘I’ve got enough to do a whole record here that stands up on its own.’ Because I didn’t want to leave it at ‘Party All the Time.’ It’s a good song, but I didn’t want to leave it there."
