Islamic scholar and da’wah activist Sheikh Burhan Kiti earlier this month publicly criticized Ugandan Christians who venerate the Uganda Martyrs, regarding their actions as misguided.
Speaking at a recent public gathering, Sheikh Kiti expressed his disapproval of the annual pilgrimage to Namugongo, where many Christians gather to honor the martyrs as heroes of faith.
His statement received massive backlash from Christian believers and others, with many calling him out for his demeaning language.
Other believers even asked Sheikh Kiti to return the vehicle he received as a result of a social media fundraiser spearheaded by King Saha.
Sheikh Kiti has since apologized to Christian believers for his statement, revealing he did not intend to demean or disapprove of Catholics.
The popular Islamic promoter explained that he intended to advise, not to demean, Christian believers.
"I am apologizing for the comments I made earlier. I didn't intend to demean people or other religions. I have friends who are Christians and Catholics; I intended to advise, not to demean anyone. I am very sorry for whoever was affected, and I apologize," read part of the statement as he narrated it in a video making rounds online.
Sheikh Kiti is also popular in opposition circles and is famous for calling out the government over injustices and other issues.
