Veteran singer Mark Bugembe, popularly known as Buchaman, has opened up on his long-running struggles with music ownership, revealing that he does not own copyrights to the songs he released under Firebase Crew.
Buchaman began his career under Firebase Records, a label owned by Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, where he served as Vice President while Bobi led the group. Together, they released several hit songs that dominated the airwaves for years.
However, after parting ways with the camp, Buchaman says he discovered that all his songs from the Firebase era don’t belong to him.
“I don’t own any copyright on all the music I released while in Firebase. Most of the songs featured on Bobi Wine’s albums, and others are owned by Dream Studios. I can only perform them, but I don’t have any rights over them,” Buchaman revealed.
The singer, who now serves as a Presidential Advisor on Ghetto Affairs, has called on the Ugandan government to review copyright laws to help him and other artistes reclaim ownership of their old music.
“Government should help us trace and reclaim our music rights. I deserve a share in what I created while under Firebase,” he added.
