Music executive Benon Mugumbya, co-founder of Swangz Avenue, has defended the label against ongoing allegations of exploitation.
Speaking in an interview, Benon said Swangz operates differently from other labels by always putting the artist’s interests first.
“I see people talking about exploitative record labels—but we are different. Much as it’s a business, Swangz prioritises the artist’s win more than the business side,” he said.
Swangz Avenue—home to Vinka, Winnie Nwagi, Azawi, Elijah Kitaka, Zafaran and formerly Irene Ntale, Michael Ross, and the late Sera—remains one of the region’s most respected music powerhouses.
