Political and social critic Frank M. Gashumba has taken aim at Ugandan public figures who describe themselves as celebrities, arguing that some do not live up to the status associated with the title.

Speaking during one of his regular talk shows, Gashumba questioned how individuals who wear second-hand clothes and use charcoal stoves at home can confidently consider themselves celebrities.

“Stop branding yourselves as celebrities when you still wear second-hand clothes. And if you consider yourself a celebrity while using a charcoal stove at home, never regard yourself as one. When you give yourselves that title, you have to look and live it,” he said.

Gashumba argued that being a celebrity comes with certain expectations, particularly in terms of lifestyle and public image.

He further claimed that many of Uganda's self-proclaimed celebrities are struggling financially despite portraying themselves as successful personalities.
