Veteran music producer David Washington has opened up about his experiences working with singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, describing some of their projects as challenging but memorable.
Washington recalled working with Bobi Wine during the early stages of his music career, revealing that the singer once approached him with an idea for a song titled Wendi.
According to Washington, he initially struggled to understand Bobi Wine's vision after hearing the song, although they eventually managed to complete the project.
“I have my musician known as Ssentamu Robert, whom many refer to as Bobi Wine. Back in the early days, he approached me with the idea of a song titled ‘Wendi’, and when he sang the song, I wasn't getting things well, but we did it,” he partly said.
‘We Completed Adam Ne Kawa in 30 Minutes’
Washington also recalled Adam Ne Kawa as one of his most memorable projects with Bobi Wine and Nubian Li.
He said Bobi Wine picked him and Nubian Li up in a blue pickup truck, with the trio working on the song during their journey to the studio.
“That day was very amazing... By the time we reached the studio, it only took me five minutes. We completed the song in 30 minutes and he returned me home,” he added.
Combining Bobi Wine and Nubian Li Was Difficult
Washington admitted that one of the biggest challenges was blending Bobi Wine and Nubian Li's vocals and styles in a way that sounded cohesive.
He said he drew inspiration from Jamaican duo Chaka Demus & Pliers, who were influential at the time, as he sought to achieve a similar chemistry between the two Ugandan artistes.
“The challenging moment was combining Nubian Li and Bobi Wine to sound and rhyme well because, in those days, we had Chaka Demus and Pliers, and they were big... It was a bit tough, but Tonny Holes helped me out greatly with this project because he understood me very well,” he said.
Washington's recollections highlight the creative experimentation that went into some of the projects that helped shape Bobi Wine and Nubian Li's early musical careers.
