All herbal medicine practitioners across the country are set to be registered by the National Drug Authority-NDA so as to ensure the quality and safety of herbal medicine.

The development was revealed by Michael Mutyaba the Manager National Medicines at NDA who says the move to register all herbal medicine practitioners is geared towards ensuring quality and ascertain the effectiveness of herbal medicine.

“It’s the cardinal role of the National Drug Authority to protect human and animal population from poor quality, unsafe and infective drugs,” Mutyaba stated.

Mutyaba noted that the Health Ministry has established that 60% of Ugandans consume herbal medicine. However, only 180 locally made herbal medicines have been registered and cleared by NDA.

President National Herbalists Association Jamil Mukwaya Lutakome, welcomes the move, arguing that registering herbalists will help weed out impersonators and conmen.

He urged the herbalists to improve the quality of medicines to increase its acceptability in the market.
