The opposition Democratic Party-DP has commenced internal processes to identify a candidate to represent the party in the East African Legislative Assembly-EALA.

The EALA elections is slated for next year. While speaking to journalists on Tuesday at the party headquarters at City House, the DP Secretary-General Gerald Siranda said the process was opened last Tuesday.
Siranda noted that all party members are free to pick application forms from the party secretariat as long as they fulfill the conditions among which is not being a sitting Member of Parliament.

He added that the party’s National Executive Committee- NEC which comprises 52 members will convene on December 6 and 8 to vet the candidates and that members who will not be vetted will not be allowed to contest as independent candidates.

Members will also be required to sign a commitment letter indicating they will not contest as independent candidates.

According to Siranda, the Party has started internal process earlier to give the endorsed candidates adequate time to canvass for votes from the 529 Members of Parliament.

Each of the East African Community member countries has to send nine legislators to the Arusha-based Assembly.

DP has been represented by Mukasa Mbidde for the last 10 years, and his second term expires next year.
