Democratic Front (DF) boss Mathias Mpunga is breathing fire after his political party suffered a total wipeout in the recently concluded general elections.
Mpunga’s Democratic Front, which was launched with big promises and loud confidence, failed to secure even a single parliamentary seat across the country. The party’s misery didn’t spare its top leadership either, with Mpunga himself, Secretary General Micheal Mabikke, and other senior figures all losing badly.
Before the elections, DF leaders had boldly refused to front a presidential candidate, insisting their focus was strictly on parliamentary dominance. The party even welcomed several politicians who had been denied tickets by National Unity Platform (NUP) and went as far as paying nomination fees for candidates—hoping this strategy would deliver victories.
But the plan backfired spectacularly.
Now, Mpunga says the loss was not organic, accusing NRM and NUP of working together behind the scenes to politically eliminate Democratic Front candidates.
“I saw people connive to make our candidates lose across the country. Mostly NRM and NUP. They had a friendly connection during these elections,” Mpunga said while addressing the media.
His remarks have sparked debate online, with political observers questioning how two rival parties could allegedly cooperate, while critics argue DF simply failed to convince voters.
With zero seats, bruised egos, and growing internal pressure, questions are now being asked about the future of Democratic Front and whether Mpunga’s political gamble has permanently damaged his credibility.
