Kampala's top politician and tennis legend, Cedric Babu, is currently admitted at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, battling for his life due to heart-related complications.
Cedric Babu was admitted at Aga Khan Hospital earlier this month after collapsing in Kigali, Rwanda, where he had accompanied his son for a tennis tournament.
He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, and his family has rallied for financial support through an online "GoFundMe" program.
"Dear friends, We’re writing this with urgency and hope in our hearts. Cedric — our father, brother, son, uncle, friend, and bright light — is currently in the ICU, courageously fighting for his life after being diagnosed with severe heart failure," part of the statement read.
The statement released further revealed that his condition has worsened rapidly and he can only survive after a heart transplant. However, the procedure can only be done abroad, particularly in London, United Kingdom.
"His condition has deteriorated rapidly, and doctors have confirmed that his only chance of survival now lies in a heart transplant. This life-saving procedure can only be done abroad, and Cedric must be medically evacuated to London immediately to begin the process," the statement added.
The family says they are targeting £300,000, which is approximately 1.2 billion Uganda shillings, for the heart transplant process in London.
"We are launching this fundraiser to raise £300,000. This is more than a medical emergency — it’s a fight for Cedric’s future. Every donation, big or small, brings us one step closer to giving him the second chance he desperately needs. The family has also called upon friends and well-wishers in Nairobi to visit the hospital and donate blood for Cedric's therapy.
"Dear all, this is a call for friends, family, and well-wishers in Nairobi, Kenya, to come and register to donate blood for Cedric's therapy. The process involves screening, followed by a schedule for when you will be called upon to make your donation. Please go to the Aga Khan Hospital Blood Donor Unit. Cedric's Donor Account is AK02964876," the statement read as the family called upon everyone to continue praying for Cedric's well-being.
Cedric Babu is also popular in the media. He is famous for hosting the "Cedric Live Show" on UBC Television and other high-profile productions.
Cedric has been a prominent member of the NRM, particularly in Kampala, and a promoter of Muhoozi Kainerugaba. In 2021, he contested for the MP position of Kampala Central under the NRM and lost to Nsereko Muhammad.
Cedric Babu is the son of former minister Captain Francis Babu, and his mother, Olive Zaitun Kigongo, is popular in Kampala's business community. She is currently serving as the CEO of the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI).
