Musician Mikie Wine has responded to growing criticism over his absence from the campaign trail of his elder brother, Bobi Wine (Kyagulanyi Ssentamu), the National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate.
While many expected Mikie to join other family members in performing at Bobi Wine’s rallies, the singer clarified during a recent YouTube interview that he is currently focused on promoting his upcoming concert through an awareness tour.
Mikie emphasized that his decision does not mean he has abandoned his brother’s cause, but rather that he must continue working to sustain himself.
“My job is music, and if I do not work, I will not eat. Uganda doesn’t belong to my family, but it concerns us all equally. Just as you send me to run the campaigns, you should be there too. It is not a family business,” Mikie explained.
The artist further stressed that Bobi Wine’s campaign is a national movement, not a family affair, urging all Ugandans who believe in the NUP’s ideals to get involved instead of expecting only his family to lead the effort.
“At this point, he is not just my brother but a presidential candidate who you should support, too, if you believe in his ideas. We are fighting against nepotism, and we do not want this to be about the Ssentamu brothers. We need to fight together if we believe in him,” Mikie added.
He concluded by noting that he continues to contribute to his brother’s campaign in his own way, including using proceeds from his music career to support the movement financially.
