Renowned journalist Andrew Mwenda has sparked massive debate online after suggesting that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni should appoint General Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the new CEO of Uganda Airlines.
Speaking during a discussion on UBC Television, Mwenda argued that Uganda Airlines can only operate efficiently if it is led by someone from the first family, particularly Muhoozi, who can easily access and influence the President.
According to Mwenda, leadership from within the first family would eliminate bureaucratic delays and ensure quick decision-making.
“If Uganda is to run an airline, it would either require Museveni to appoint Muhoozi as CEO, or another family member who can easily reach him. The other solution is to hire foreign professionals,” Mwenda explained.
His remarks have since ignited heated discussions on social media, with many Ugandans questioning the logic behind his proposal, while others agree that proximity to power could improve efficiency at the national carrier.
Mwenda’s comments come at a time when President Museveni is reportedly seeking to appoint a new CEO for Uganda Airlines following the sacking of Jennifer Bamuturaki earlier this month.
Unconfirmed reports also suggest that the President is considering hiring the former CEO of Ethiopian Airlines as an alternative option to lead the struggling national carrier.
