Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba has publicly urged Justice Minister Norbert Mao to withdraw from the race for Speaker of Parliament.
In a social media post, Muhoozi referred to Mao as his “big brother” and appealed to him to step aside from what is shaping up to be a heated political contest.
“I respectfully request my big brother Ladit Norbert Mao to not run for Speaker of Parliament… we can get better positions,” he wrote.
Mao Stands Firm
Despite the appeal, Mao has shown no signs of backing down, insisting he remains fully committed to the race.
“My foot is firmly on the gas pedal… this is not about me, it is about the issues,” he said in response.
Mao, who also leads the Democratic Party, is currently attending the National Resistance Movement (NRM) retreat in Kyankwanzi—an unusual development that has added intrigue to his candidacy.
Museveni Weighs In
President Yoweri Museveni further fueled the debate, revealing that the NRM’s Central Executive Committee had recommended that Anita Among retain her position as Speaker, alongside her deputy Thomas Tayebwa.
“We recommend… and when the time comes, we shall explain why,” Museveni said.
Race Heats Up
The contest has attracted several contenders, including Persis Namuganza, Lydia Wanyoto, and Florence Asiimwe Akiiki.
However, the main spotlight remains on the looming showdown between Mao and incumbent Speaker Anita Among.
With political temperatures rising, all eyes are now on how the ruling party and Parliament will navigate what is becoming a high-stakes leadership battle.
