In a recent interview, musician and politician Bobi Wine strongly criticized Uganda’s music industry over the stalled copyright law. He stated the law hasn't passed not because it's impossible, but because the government actively chooses not to enact it.

According to Bobi Wine, the government knows that a copyright law would financially empower artists, which in turn would make them less dependent on the regime.

He referenced a recent push by the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), led by Eddy Kenzo and Sheebah, to get the law approved. Instead of a new law, Bobi Wine says the musicians were offered large sums of money to create disunity among them.

He went on to say that no one can liberate these artists except themselves.

"The government will not approve the copyright law because it does not wish to," he stated. "Numerous laws, such as the Computer Misuse Act and those intended to undermine coffee farmers, have been passed, while the copyright law remains stagnant in the legislative chambers."

He also expressed his disappointment that his attempts to educate his fellow artists have been met with resistance, with some viewing him as an adversary.

He concluded by addressing the rise of vulgar music in the industry, urging artists to consider their legacy. While there have always been artists who make such music, he noted, they are often forgotten.
