Hussein Muyonjo, popularly known as Swengere, has been declared Member of Parliament–elect for Jinja Northern Division after edging out NRM’s Jinja City Chairperson, Nelson Lufafa, in a fiercely contested parliamentary race.
Swengere secured the seat on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, marking a major political victory for the opposition in the Busoga sub-region.
While many critics argue that Swengere rode on comedy skits to Parliament, his political journey stretches far beyond entertainment. Over the years, he deliberately outgrew the boundaries of comedy, positioning himself as a serious public figure.
Beyond comedy, Swengere built a solid media career, becoming one of the most influential radio hosts in the Busoga region. He worked with Baba FM, owned by NRM’s Moses Grace Balyeku, and later Busoga One Radio, owned by NUP’s Paul Mwiru. These platforms not only amplified his popularity but also exposed him to both NRM and opposition political circles.
His ability to maintain strong relationships across the political divide earned him widespread acceptance and trust among voters.
Swengere also nurtured close ties with key Busoga power brokers, including the Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Wilberforce Nadiope, and former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. Their influence and goodwill are believed to have played a significant role in easing his transition from media personality to elected leader.
