The President of the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), Eddy Kenzo, has criticized the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) over its planned distribution of Shs200 million in royalties, arguing that the amount is too small to make a meaningful impact on musicians across the country.
Speaking while addressing musicians on Tuesday afternoon, Kenzo questioned the transparency surrounding how the money was collected and how it would be distributed among artistes.
The award-winning singer explained that the figures do not add up, arguing that if Shs200 million is shared among all Ugandan musicians, individual artistes would receive a very small amount.
"I saw our brothers from UPRS posting that they were going to distribute Shs200 million to all Ugandan musicians. To be honest, that is not fair. How did you collect it and how are you going to distribute it? Shs200 million to the entire country? That means I’m going to get only Shs2,000. It’s a shame," he explained.
The Presidential Advisor on Creatives called upon the UPRS leadership to provide greater transparency regarding the collection and distribution of royalties, insisting that musicians deserve to know how the funds are generated and allocated.
