Why Artistes Hate Record Labels?

Late Prince once warned young artists that Record Contracts Are 'Slavery'. Artists used to sign with labels if they wanted to be cool and if they wanted to make money—but that's changing. Some local musicians would prefer to run their own day to day affairs than engage someone/company to do it for them.

A record label is also a publishing company that manages brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos; conducts talent scouting and development of new artists. Here are some of the common reasons they detest labels,

Greed

We recently witnessed singer Irene Ntale exiting Muyenga based music label, Swangz Avenue to continue her career being her own boss.

Most labels take the biggest share of the artiste’s income. That lion share that the management takes worries a number of musicians. When they get a chance they quit.

Limitations

Record labels turn into slaves since the artists have little control or insight over how labels take their music and profit. Most of them yearn for fame and making more money.Recently, Kenya’s Red San was signed under Sony Records but he was only limited to one song each year that also goes through a lot of scrutinies before release.Ask Keko about Sony, she will tell you how she felt trapped with the record label. Much of these limitations backslide the artistes aggressive desire to be out on the market with jams day in day out.

Unbalanced attention

These record labels have more than one artiste but they tend to push/concentrate on one artiste ignoring others. This normally creates conflict within the label. Take a look at Swangz Avenue, how they neglected Ntale and concentrated on Winnie Nwagi. It took her less than 3 years to be a star.
