The Police have opened phone lines asking the public to call in any case of an attack on their businesses warning them to be aware of any activity that may lead to riots or vandalism.
The development comes after Police say they obtained credible information about plans by a group of criminal minded persons to hold illegal demonstrations targeting Kampala City, from the city suburbs of Maindye, Nansana, Kyengera, Bwaise, Kireka, Nankulabye, Kibuye, Katwe, Nalukolongo among others.
However, the police deem these demonstrations illegal because they are not authorized by Police as required under the Public Order Management Act, due to the potential of culminating into riots across the city; including arson, looting of properties, destruction and vandalism, and violent clashes between Police and rock throwing protesters.
According to a statement released by police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the public should immediately report to the police for action on telephone contacts;
0714667743 / 0800199399 / 0800199088 / 0800122291 / 0800199699.
The riots are according to Enanga planned for today.
“It is on record during the last such unlawful protests that several businesses reported damage, buildings destroyed, vehicles vandalized and injuries sustained.”
To avoid a repeat of such loss and injury, the Police are better prepared for violence tomorrow, Thursday, 10th March, 2016, and secured all routes leading to the City centre.
“We have in addition, given orders to the Commanders and Officers to strictly observe the discipline and formation necessary to counter and navigate their way through a civil disturbance, charge rioters and quell the disturbance, to help safeguard and secure the lives and properties of all Ugandans and visitors within the Kampala City area.”
