Voting of the African Union Commission chairperson has been suspended after the three contenders failed to make the 2/3 as required.

The election was held in Kigali Rwanda this morning during the 27th AU summit 2016.

Uganda’s former and first female vice President Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe managed to scoop only 11 votes, Botswana’s current Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr Ms Pelonomi Venson garnered 16 votes, while Equatorial Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Agapito Mba Mokuy garnered 12 votes.

After the suspension, an announcement has been made that the Deputy Chairperson H.E Erastus Mwencha takes office until January 2017 when the summit will sit again.

The election was cancelled after 28 Countries abstained in the 7th and final round of voting. 15 ECOWAS countries boycotted the African Union Commission Elections this morning and other countries joined in.

However, campaign continues.
