Speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has this afternoon threatened to drag News Editors to a rules committee if they continue writing unbalanced stories.
Kadaga who is chairing Thursday’s plenary sitting drew her anger from a series of stories about parliament’s extravagancy that have been running in different dailies and on several radio stations and websites.
“The press have stories that are not factual, these stories designed to paint Parliament in a bad light.”
According to the speaker, there were reports that parliament sponsored 78 legislators to attend the just concluded UNAA convention in Boston US, yet actually only 26 members attended.
She also claims to have read a story in one of the dailies claiming that she had awarded medals to Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Winnie Byanyima, a story she calls false.
Kadaga also complained about a story of the Abortion Bill that is allegedly in the offing which has got the clergy talking night and day. Former ethics minister Nsaba Butuuro has also promised to fight the Bill until his last breath, but the speaker claims there is no such a bill.
“I caution the press, the next time such reports are made, editors will be asked to apologize and asked to appear before a rules committee” Kadaga reacted.
Her sentiments were supported by Peter Sematimba who said Parliament needs to amend the Press and Journalist Act and give it teeth. Chris Baryomunsi also jumped in saying Media should respect Parliament in their reporting, tasking the Parliamentary commission to come up with guidelines.
One Hon. Kakooza sent the media to hell over false reports. “Whoever is publishing false stories about Parliament, go to hell.”
