International Day for Persons with Disabilities Celebrations Pushed to Next Week Due to the Nomination Exercise

Uganda will on Wednesday December 9th join the rest of the world to commemorate the international day of persons with disabilities.

Addressing the press in Kampala this morning, Suleiman Madada the minister of state for gender, labor and social development (Disability, and elderly affairs) revealed that the day is always celebrated on December 3rd which is today, but due to the fact that the electoral commission is carrying out nominations, the date has been postponed to next week.

People with disabilities constitute 16% of the population in Uganda, translating to approximately 5.2%.

This year’s theme is “Inclusion; a key to access and empowerment of persons with disabilities.”

“The main theme has different subthemes which require to be strategically considered in our policies and plans to promote the participation of all persons with disabilities. This year, one of the subthemes is making cities inclusive and accessible for all;” Says Minister Madada.

This year’s national celebrations will be held in the Eastern Region in Tororo District, at King George IV memorial Stadium.
