The Uganda Cranes are on the brink of making history tonight as they face off against South Africa in a decisive African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group C match. A draw at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, would be enough to see Uganda advance to the quarter-finals for the very first time in their seven appearances at the tournament.

A victory would be even sweeter, not only guaranteeing a spot in the final eight but also securing the top spot in the group and a return to Namboole for their next match.

Head coach Morley Byekwaso is clear that his team isn't playing for a tie. “South Africa is a quality side with a sharp attack, but we understand what’s at stake," he said during Sunday’s press conference. "We’ve worked too hard to get to this point just to aim for a draw. The defeat to Algeria hurt us, but it made us stronger. The way we’ve responded shows this team is ready to make history.”

Uganda currently leads Group C with six points. They bounced back from a tough 3-0 loss to Algeria in their opening match with a convincing 3-0 win over Guinea and a solid 2-0 victory against Niger. However, they will be missing key midfielder Joel Sserunjogi, who is suspended due to accumulated yellow cards.

“Losing Joel is unfortunate, but every player has their moment," Byekwaso noted. "I believe in the rest of the squad to step up. And I can’t say enough about our fans—they’ve been phenomenal. We’ll need them louder than ever tonight.”

What's at Stake for Group C Teams?

  • Uganda: A draw guarantees progression; a win secures the top spot.

  • South Africa: Must win to qualify.

  • Algeria: Needs a victory over Niger to have a chance.

  • Niger: Already eliminated, playing for pride.

With a passionate home crowd behind them and a chance to rewrite their CHAN story, tonight’s match is more than just a game—it's Uganda's golden opportunity to finally break the group-stage barrier.
