Tooro Queen Mother Best Kemigisa has revealed that the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s child remained in the United States as the royal family returned to Uganda with his body for burial.
In a statement of appreciation issued after Oyo’s burial, Kemigisa said the family had initially planned for the child to travel with them from Texas.
“Before leaving Texas, our family had hoped that King Oyo’s child would return on the same plane with us,” she said.
However, she explained that the escalating succession dispute in Tooro changed those plans, with the family becoming concerned about bringing the child into a tense environment.
“As events unfolded in Tooro, concerns grew about bringing a child into a tense and polarised succession dispute. Ultimately, the child did not return with us,” she said.
Oyo’s death triggered a succession dispute after members of his family said he had left a son who should succeed him, while Babiito elders selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as his successor. The competing positions have remained a major source of tension within the kingdom.
Kemigisa has since called for peace and respect for lawful processes as the dispute continues, while urging supporters of Oyo and his legacy to remain calm.
