Musician Elijah Kitaka has delivered a blunt assessment of the local music industry, saying it still has a long way to go despite ongoing copyright reforms.
Speaking during a TikTok Live session, Kitaka questioned whether the Copyright Amendment Bill will bring real change.
“The industry is like 1500 years behind,” he said, suggesting that many of the goals artists are fighting for may not be achieved anytime soon.
Kitaka clarified that his remarks are not meant to undermine the industry but to highlight its deeper challenges.
“I am speaking as an artist trying to penetrate the international market—not to discredit the industry,” he explained.
He pointed out that a major issue is the lack of understanding of copyright among artists, attributing it to limited education and training.
“We have been talking about money and don’t sit for workshops… every time people meet, it’s all about other things,” he added.
According to Kitaka, the industry needs to prioritize training, workshops, and knowledge-sharing if artists are to truly benefit from copyright laws and compete on a global level.
