Musician Edirisa Musuza, also known as Eddy Kenzo, started the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) with the primary goal of advocating for the amendment of the copyright law.
The federation has been in existence for almost three years now, but that goal has not yet been achieved.
The President of the UNMF and a presidential advisor on creatives, has given hope to artists, revealing that the law will be amended soon, according to an update received from Parliament.
He revealed that the government's failure to amend the copyright law would be a betrayal and that this can never happen.
"I think the amendment was brought for the first reading in Parliament. It will be brought back for the second reading, then the debate will continue, and I expect it to be amended soon, as I was promised by Parliament. It will happen because if it fails, that will be a betrayal, and the President can't allow it to happen," he explained in an interview with a local television station.
The copyright law amendment was introduced to Parliament by Hillary Kiyaga, also known as Dr. Hilderman. However, it was taken over by the government, and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General are now directly in charge of it.
Kenzo says its amendment will bring not only money to the artists but also ownership of their creations and wealth.
