Cabinet has approved the borrowing of USD 11.2 Million from the Kuwait Fund for Economic Development for a project, to further extend power to rural areas in six districts in Uganda.
The benefactors are Kiryandongo, Kibale, Nebbi, Bushenyi, Kasese and Rukungiri.
During a press briefing in Kampala on Thursday, Jim K Muhwezi, the Information and National guidance minister said the project is expected to increase rural connectivity by putting in place new power lines totaling to 285Km in these districts.
“It will be implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency. The project infrastructure will include 33 Kilo Voltage and 11 Kilo Voltage for manufacturing and domestic use respectively,” Muhwezi said
He added; “It will promote agro-processing, improve the quality of social services, and reduce rural-urban migration in the targeted districts.”
According to minister Muhwezi, cabinet has authorized the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to proceed and seek approval from Parliament, for government to borrow the 11.2M Dollars.
“Such Parliamentary approval for under Article 159 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. I, therefore, call upon Parliament to grant the necessary go ahead so that the rural electrification project starts as soon as possible.”
