The opposition forum for democratic party, FDC leader Col. Dr. Kiiza Besigye has not showed up to the Nakawa High Court for hearing of his case.
Besigye is on remand in Luzira on charges of treason and was supposed to appear before Nakawa Chief Magistrate James Mawanda only for him not to show.
The development comes after the Director Public Prosecution, DPP Mike Chibita’s team asked court to proceed with the hearing at Luzira, citing a security threat on Besigye’s life.
Magistrate Mawanda refused to grant permission in private and asked the DPP to make his case openly, something he did this morning.
In response, chief magistrate Mawanda said he will deliver a ruling on the matter on June 15th.
However, this left many FDC supporters who were in court to raise voices against the decision, as the magistrate threatened to throw them out.
These would later refuse to leave court until all doors were shut. FDC top leaders led by party president Mugisha Muntu, party spokesperson Ssemujju Nganda, Mwijukye Francis, Ingrid Turinawe and well wishers including Betty Namboze and Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago were in attendance.
The party spokesperson Hon. Nganda told the media after court proceedings that government is not sure of what to do with Kiiza Besigye.
People who attended court were subjected to thorough checking in search of any FDC party T-shirts or those with Kiiza Besigye’s face. Some people found wearing the T-shirts were turned away and not allowed anywhere near the court premises.
