The opposition Uganda People’s Congress, UPC party wants government to massively invest in agriculture in the 2016/17 national budget so as to eradicate poverty.

Addressing the media in Kampala this morning, UPC party president Jimmy Akena said the party welcomes the reading of this year’s National Budget.

The 2016/17 budget will be read this afternoon at Serena hotel in Kampala. Agriculture has been awarded 0.8 trillion shillings, nearly doubling the 2015/16 agricultural budget.

But Akena says; “The party expects all aspects of the country’s economy as addressed in the State of the Nation Speeach will be adequately provided for in the NationalBudget.”

He added; “UPC has always promoted the interests and addressed the concerns of the rural population, and therefore hopes that agriculture will see an increase in its share of the Budget.”

In the 2016/17 FY budget, sugar, cigarette and fuel taxes will rise, while taxes on agricultural machinery will be removed.
