The inspector general of police Gen. Kale Kayihura has this morning clarified that only one UPDF personnel was killed during a gunfire exchange at Gulu main police station last night.
Addressing the press at Naguru this morning, the IGP warned the media against spreading rumors that two people were killed, claiming they are fear and panic among the public.
Last night, at around 8:30 PM, unknown gunmen attacked Gulu main police station trying to break out a suspect.
“We have evidence linking the suspect in custody to earlier attack on 27 may on UPDF detach,” says Kayihura.
The IGP adds; “Gang travelled to police station on pickup truck under cover of another vehicle, they left behind 6 AK 47 guns, one machine gun, a bow and arrows among other weapons.
Also several other officers were injured in the scuffle that lasted about 30 minutes. He however explains that the situation is back to normal and assures the country of safety.
“Despite of attack we assure the country that Uganda is peaceful and stable. Those spreading wrong information about the attack are causing fear and panic among the public,” Kayihura noted.
The IGP also says the attackers were about 12 in number according to information he got from DPC. He also insists it was just a criminal gang trying to rescue their colleague who is due to appear in court today.
None of the attackers were arrested since it was at night making it difficult for the officers to pursue the, though the joint forces neutralized them.
