Opposition Uganda Peoples’ Congress, UPC party has disassociated itself from statements made by constitutional lawyer, also member of the Otunnu faction, Peter Walubiri that the Party has been compromised by the appointment of party member as a minister.

According to the party, UPC under the leadership of Jimmy Akena is seeking for integration and National Unity, not otherwise.

The party, via its official twitter account explains that it has always been UPC interests for dialogue, truth and reconciliation after it fought hard to free political space in 2004.

In a local daily today, a story was carried with Walubiri claiming that President Museveni gave Akena money and soldiers who hijacked the electoral process.

UPC has two factions of Jimmy Akena which has of late come under fire for collaborating with the ruling NRM to form a unity government, and the old Otunnu faction which is against the move.

The Akena faction argues that; “the core values of UPC is integration, National Unity and reconciliation to fight relentlessly poverty ignorance and disease. UPC & her Party President Hon. JAkena are committed to improved welfare of all Ugandans & these form the backbone for talks with Govt.”

But Walubiri argues that UPC members supporting the Museveni-Akena alliance are being driven by selfish motives.

There is also talk around political corridors that Akena will be made a deputy prime minister soon. Walubiri also said the party would expel Akena if he insists on joining forces with Museveni.
