Singer Serena Bata has stirred controversy after publicly stating that fellow musician Joshua Baraka is currently performing far better than Eddy Kenzo.
While speaking in an interview with a local YouTuber, Serena expressed dissatisfaction with Kenzo’s recent Grammy Awards nomination, arguing that he is no longer musically dominant in Uganda.
Serena claims that Kenzo has not released any impactful music recently and that it is artists like Joshua Baraka who are currently ruling playlists and topping charts.
“At the moment I think the awards are a bit confusing. Kenzo’s songs are not known anywhere in Uganda right now. We have different songs which have done well and deserve the nomination—I think it should have gone to Joshua Baraka,” she said.
Serena joins a list of musicians and fans who have questioned Kenzo’s nomination for Best African Music Performance at the Grammy Awards for his collaboration with instrumentalist Mehran Matin on the inspirational track “Hope and Love.”
Despite criticizing the selection, Serena acknowledged that the nomination is still positive for the country and hopes it opens more doors for Ugandan music globally.
Her remarks have triggered heated conversations online, especially among fans of both artists.
