There is grief and shock in Kasenene village, Luwero district following the death of two locals who suffocated to death in a house fire. 

The deceased Abdullah Ssenyange, 21, and a one-year-old baby died in the wee hours of Monday morning after their house caught fire under unclear circumstances.

Locals believe that the fire could have started from a candle that was left burning while the duo fell asleep.

  1. Living Twazagye, the Luwero District Police Commander says the duo was burnt beyond recognition alongside the property within the residence.

He explains that the infant's parents, Musa Kabuye and his wife, left home to party at a local bar where they received the news that their house was on fire at 3 am.

He further explains that when Kabuye returned home in a rush, he failed to rescue his family but only managed to pull out his motorcycle from the house and sustained injuries in the process.

The deceased's remains are currently at Mulago Regional Referral hospital Mortuary as investigations commence.

According to the Police crime report 2021, a total of 1,258 fire cases were reported to Police in 2021 compared to 1,015 cases registered in 2020.

Of these, 272 fire cases were attributed to negligence, followed by an electrical short circuit with 186 incidents and charcoal/candle wax with 164 cases among others.

Residential houses were most affected by the fires with 364 incidents followed by makeshift structures with 273 incidents and commercial buildings with 168 cases.
