The Uganda National Examinations Board, Uneb has this afternoon released the 2016 Senior Four results at the office of the prime minister.

The results were handed over to the Education and sports minister Janet Kataha Museveni who later released them amid calls for improvement in performance.

A total of 323,233 candidates sat 2016 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams from 3,454 centres across the country.

23,489 Candidates passed in Div 1, 44, 307 in Div 2, 63,072 in Div 3, 142,479 in Div 4 and 41,632 in Div 9, indicating a decline in performance as compared to 2015 results.

Education minister Janet Museveni blamed the decline in performance to inadequate teaching which she in turn says leads to no completion of the prescribed curriculum, theoretical teaching in areas that require considerable amounts of practical work and speculation by teachers.

“I have learnt that in our system, teaching is geared to passing examinations, teachers spend a lot of resources and time in making students sit for various forms of the so called mock examinations prepared by various groups. Teachers no longer carry out assessments of their own students and therefore are not in position to discover the learning difficulties their learners may be experiencing” the minister noted.

The first lady also thanked Uneb for making efforts to ensure that Luzira prison inmates continue sitting their examinations, arguing that this makes the prison system restorative to the human spirit and makes the prisoners become more useful citizens when they are re-integrated back in the community.

47 inmates were registered at Luzira prison, however only 44 sat the examination. Of these, 4 passed in division one, 5 in division two, 10 in division 3, 21 in division 4 while 4 failed.
