Makerere University has issued an order chasing away all businesses operating within the campus.

In a letter dated July 01, the University authorities direct College Principals, Directors, Hall Wardens, and custodians to ensure all business spaces within the University are vacated.

Those affected include; hair salons, mobile money shops, food stalls, photocopy, printing and stationeries, and small restaurants among others.

The Makerere University Council reached the resolution during a meeting with the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration.

The letter threatens that all defiant business owners within the University will be charged with trespass and have their merchandise confiscated.

The authorities have only spared those contracted by the university to cater at selected kitchens within the halls of residence.

Julius Gumisiriza, the Chairman MBOA says the association received a block copy from a hall warden but the letter does not address why the evacuation notice stands.

Gumisiriza says the University is supposed to give business owners six months' notice prior to the evacuation as per the landlord and tenants act of 202 because some have worked there for over 30 years.

He says the association is looking to engage the University Administration to agree on what needs to be done to improve their quality of services if this is the cause of the termination of their businesses.

In 2013 under Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu, Makerere university evicted kiosks that had dotted University roads and the lockups that had been operating opposite the University Canteen, Nsibirwa, and Livingstone halls of residence.

The eviction of the kiosks followed a meeting between Makerere University management and the business operators, under their umbrella body MBOA.
