An emergency meeting by Makerere University Council has resolved to ban all future physical guild elections at the University henceforth.
According to the Council, students’ leaders will be virtually voted.
Lorna Magara, the Council Chairperson, says the first resolution was to terminate the electoral process of the 88th guild leadership and any physical elections going forward.
They have also suspended all activities of senior common room, caretaker government, guild leadership structures including brigades and other unauthorized groups at the University.
The council has also formed a committee of six people to investigate a violent incident at the university that left one student dead.
Bewotti Batungura 27, a student from Uganda Christian University, was stabbed in the neck on Thursday night during the 88th guild presidential campaigns.
His death resulted from a violent confrontation between supporters of two opposing parties, the National Unity Platform and Forum for Democratic Change.
The incident led the University Council to halt elections that had been slated for today, and hold an emergency meeting on the way forward.
The appointed members of the review committee will be led by Associate Professor Helen Nambalirwa Nkabala who will serve as the Chairperson.
Other members include; Daniel Fred Kidega, Eng Dr S. P, Kagoda, Associate Prof Sarah Ssali, Bruce Balaba Kabaasa and John Chris Ninsiima.
Magara says the team will in a one-month period avail Makerere University Council with an interim report.
“The select committee will evaluate the internal processes of conducting guild elections, investigate the conduct of hall wardens and custodians in the enforcement of University regulations regarding the management of students’ Halls of residence,” Magara said.
Magara also says that other areas for investigations by the selected committee will be assessing the role of the police in providing security in students’ activities at the University, investigating external influences in students’ activities, and any other matters incidental to the committee’s mandate.
Students who will be found culpable for the deadly skirmishes will be dealt with according to University’s disciplinary procedures.
