Four police operatives accused of torturing Godfrey Byamukama, the Kamwenge Town Council LC 3 chairperson have appeared in court and been charged with torture. The suspects appeared on Monday afternoon before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate, Jameson Karemani for torture.

These include; Senior Police Detective Patrick Muramira and Fred Tumuhairwe, Ben Odeke as well as the Driver, Habib Roma. According to the charge sheet, the officers together with others still at large, tortured Byamukama, by beating him with batons and iron bars on the knees and ankles immediately after his arrest.

The torture is alleged to have occurred on April 05th 2017 shortly after Byamukama was arrested from the office of the Commissioner planning and Quality Assurance in the Lands and Urban Development Ministry, William Turyomurugendo.

The four pleaded not guilty to the charges and applied for bail through their lawyer, Humphrey Tumwesigye, saying it is their constitutional right. However, the State Prosecutor, Nelly Asiku asked court for an adjournment so that she could verify the documents presented by the sureties.

Karemani adjourned the court to May 30th for the bail hearing and remanded the suspects to Luzira Prison.
