Students may no longer enjoy watching television while at school, the Gulu City Education Department together with security has announced.
The ban on TV time was announced by Richard Irwenyo the Gulu City Senior Inspector of Schools, who explains that the decision was reached in an emergency meeting held on Monday that was prompted by the violent strike at Gulu Central High School.
One student was killed when students went on strike after the school administration refused to show them football (Manchester Derby) on Sunday.
It is reported that dozens of schools within Gulu City broadcast live football matches, TV shows and music among others as part of the leisure time for the learners.
Irwenyo says this has been identified as a main cause of misbehavior and indiscipline among the learners, which sometimes leads to violent strikes.
They have also made a decision that no school should broadcast such shows on televisions in schools in order to avoid future occurrences much as the violent strike at Gulu Central High School was the first.
According to Irwenyo, the use of Television is strictly limited to study purposes like formulations.
