Drama ensued at Lyantode Electoral Commission offices this morning after observers discovered that ballot boxes had been tampered with.

Electoral commission officers, candidates and their agents discovered the anomaly during inspection of the materials this morning.

According to an eye witness, three ballot boxes were not sealed, prompting them to believe that they had been tampered with, on their way to the district.

The candidates and their agents later demanded that the three ballot boxes be returned to the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala for replacement.

However, Hannington Mugasira, the Lyantonde District Registrar, says the boxes could have been poorly sealed but not tampered with.

Mugasira explains that the ballot boxes contained ballot papers for Presidential, District Woman and Direct parliamentary candidates.

Residents have now sought permission to pitch camp at the Electoral Commission offices to keep watch of the boxes until Thursday, but their request was turned down, but it would later be resolved that the ballot boxes be marked with masking tapes and be stored in an isolated area.

Voting for President, Directly elected members of parliament, and Women members of parliament is slated for tomorrow Thursday 18th February 2016 across the country.
